As the lead designer of the CrossPeak 2 Freestanding Tent, I created a lightweight, high-performance shelter engineered for three-season backpacking. Designed to balance strength, space, and packability, the CrossPeak 2 features a fully freestanding architecture for reliable setup across varied terrain. Constructed with premium materials and minimal hardware, the tent offers exceptional weather protection and interior livability while maintaining a total weight of just 34 oz. The design reflects a commitment to simplicity, durability, and efficiency in backcountry environments.

Thankfully, that tent was the Hyperlite Mountain Gear CrossPeak 2, a new ultralight freestanding shelter that shouldered the wind all night without an ounce of guff. This Dyneema Composite Fabric shelter is Hyperlite’s first freestanding offering, and is still rightfully lightweight, but has much more of a spine compared to trekking pole-supported tents.
